When I was nearly nine years old, my father let me tag along on a visit to the Rios brothers boot shop in Raymondville, Texas. I’d never much thought about where or how a pair of boots were made, so watching Armando trace and measure each foot absolutely transfixed me.
After Dad & Armando settled on the details, I recall taking a walk around that shop and watching each craftsman at their art... the pattern-maker and cutter, the sewer and laster, the adornado who made a final check of each boot, rows of bright & sober-colored leathers and exotic skins rested on a shelf, the heady weight of glue in the air, the shiny threads turned by hand on an old industrial sewing machine as a pattern fleshed out on the shaft, the loud beating whirl of the belt sander on stacked leather heels being finished off to a fine shine, the hard slap-tap of lemonwood pegs securing the soles.
I was enveloped in the experience - the smells and the colors and the laughter and the mexican music playing on the radio.
As any self-confessed bootmonger will say... I caught the “boot bug” that day. I didn’t know it then... I only knew that I felt connected to all that the craft itself represented - the art, the stories and vibrant life to be lived in each well-worn sole.
This particular day took root inside me, it seems, and delaCav handcrafted bootwear was quietly and passionately conjured...
Thank you so much for your interest.
